The Australian Grand Prix qualifying ended with a new display from Jorge Martín, the fastest rider on the MotoGP grid, on a track where there were still some patches of water after the rain this morning. Behind him was Marc Márquez, who set the fastest time on both the first day of the Australian Grand Prix and today’s free practice, held on a wet track. The front row of the grid will be completed by the Aprilia of Maverick Viñales.

Marco Bezzecchi, ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia and a surprising Raul Fernandez from Q1 qualified on the second row. They will be followed by Franco Morbidelli, Álex Márquez and Álex Rins on the third row, with Enea Bastianini, Brad Binder and Fabio Di Giannantonio on the fourth row.

Luca Marini just misses out Q2

Luca Marini put in a great performance at Phillip Island on Saturday. The Repsol Honda Team rider was fourteenth in today’s free practice and was at his best in Q1 to be at the top of the timesheets for most of the session. In the end, the Repsol Honda rider was third in Q1, just a tenth of a second off the best time in Q2, and will start the weekend’s two races in thirteenth position.

His Repsol Honda team-mate Joan Mir was unable to adapt as well to the changing track conditions, which were wet at the start and gradually dried out. Mir finished nineteenth in free practice and finally qualified eighth in Q1, so he will occupy eighteenth place on the starting grid.

In just over three hours, at 15:00 local time, 6:00 Spanish time, the first race of the weekend.
