Qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix concluded with Pedro Acosta achieving pole position for the first time in his career in the premier class, beating the circuit record in the process. It came just a few moments after the stewards cancelled the best lap achieved by Marc Márquez, who had exceeded the track limits at one of the turns by touching the green zone, relegating him to ninth position.
Second on the starting grid will be Pecco Bagnaia and Maverick Viñales will complete the front row. Behind them will be Bastianini, Binder and Morbidelli, with a third row made up of Di Giannantonio, Bezzecchi and Marc Márquez. The fourth row will be shared by Álex Márquez, Jorge Martín –who had a crash during the session– and Fabio Quartararo.
Tough qualifying for Repsol Honda team riders
For Joan Mir and Luca Marini, the second day of the Japanese Grand Prix was a new challenge, as the rain at Motegi prevented them from taking too many risks.
Despite the step forward shown in the second free practice session, in which he finished thirteenth, Mir was unable to put together a good lap in Q1 and finished seventh, so he will start in seventeenth place in both the sprint race and main race.
Repsol Honda teammate Marini was eighteenth in the free practice session, and although he improved by more than a second in Q1, he placed tenth, so will start from 20th on the grid.
The Japanese GP sprint race takes place at 3pm local time, with the main race of the weekend at 2pm on Sunday.
