The Japanese Grand Prix saw a tremendous duel between the current MotoGP World Champion, Pecco Bagnaia, and current series leader, Jorge Martín. The Italian achieved the two victories at Motegi, on a weekend in which Pedro Acosta achieved pole position but crashed out twice -missing out on competing for the win.

Bagnaia’s two victories leave him with 382 points in the overall standings, compared to Martín’s 392. The latter made a great comeback from eleventh on the grid to second and still holds a 10-point lead in the overall standings.

Third place went to Marc Márquez, who also made a comeback on the first few laps after a qualifying penalty for going off track kept him down the order. He was followed by Enea Bastianini, and the two are separated by just 2 points in the standings.

The Top 10 was completed by Morbidelli, Binder, Bezzecchi, Di Giannantonio, Aleix Espargaró and Jack Miller.

More points for Luca Marini

After a difficult series of practice sessions on Friday and Saturday morning, Repsol Honda Team rider Luca Marini, finished the Japanese Grand Prix in fourteenth position, scoring two points. The Italian, who started twentieth, was able to hold his own in the early stages of the race, then maintain a pace that allowed him to catch up and overtake rivals in the second half of the contest.

His teammate, Joan Mir, was less fortunate. He started seventeenth on the grid, but was collided with by another rider, leaving him out of the race without completing the first lap.

Both will have a further opportunity to build on the progress made in recent races in two weeks’ time, at the Australian Grand Prix.

Statements

Joan Mir

«At Turn 11 I overtook Alex Marquez after he went wide, then in Turn 12 he made contact with the rear of my bike, his bike became stuck between my seat and the wheel so I had to run on and crashed. It’s a shame because I was going really well in that first lap of the race and the pace we showed yesterday in the Sprint, something good was possible.»

Luca Marini

«In the back there are always great battles and I was able to enjoy it today! On the first lap I lost quite a lot of time and a lot of positions, so it was a race of recovery. We knew from the start of the weekend that it was going to be difficult, so I think with a P13 and a P14 today that we have achieved something good. I think my rear tyre choice could have been better, so maybe we could have gained something there. But anyway, we learn and will be more prepared next year. Now we have a bit of rest and recover before another big three races.»
