Having not held a round in 2023, MotorLand Aragón returns to the MotoGP calendar this year. It did so with a strong Friday for Marc Márquez, who set a new circuit record, topping the timesheets in both the morning and afternoon.
The regular 22-man grid took to the Spanish track, down from the up to 25 from recent rounds due to the appearance of several wildcards.
With Marc Márquez’s initial dominance, the KTM’s began to make their presence felt to accompany the Borno Panigale factory at the front, although they faded in the final stretch. It was then that the World Championship leaders, as well as the four Aprilia machines and the Honda of Johann Zarco, put in a good Time Attack to ensure their presence in the fight for Pole Position at Aragon.
With Márquez the clear man to beat, setting a final time of 1:48.508, he was ahead of Aleix Espargaró, Maverick Viñales, Jorge Martín, Álex Márquez, ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia, Franco Morbidelli, Johann Zarco, Raúl Fernández and Miguel Oliveira. All ten will go directly into Q2 on Saturday.
First contact at home round for Repsol Honda riders
The third home Grand Prix for the Repsol Honda duo began with a lot of work for both Joan Mir and Luca Marini. After their test at Misano and with some aerodynamic improvements in place, both arrived at MotorLand confident about being able to take another step forward in Aragon.
Mir started Free Practice 1 solidly, in 14th position and just 1.2 seconds off the pacesetter. In the afternoon practice, the two-time World Champion struggled and was unable to complete a clean lap in the Time Attack. He finished Friday 21st, with a best lap of 1:47.843.
Marini’s feeling improved in the afternoon, and he spent much of the final part of the session in the Top 15. The Italian, with a good final flying lap, managed to lower his time to 1:47.280 and place himself 17th, just 1.2 seconds off the top spot.
On Saturday, the second day of Free Practice will be held at MotorLand, in addition to the two Qualifying sessions and the Sprint Race.

Statements
Joan Mir
“We had a bit of a difficult day today, but I think it was similar for everyone with the new surface. The grip improved a little bit in the afternoon, but in some corners it’s a bit unpredictable so I hope that improves tomorrow. We couldn’t make the most of the new tyre over a single lap and I got caught by the yellow flags. It’s all about learning and getting more information to improve everything for the future.”
Luca Marini
“The conditions of the track were improving with each lap today. Our feeling with the bike in these low grip conditions has improved a bit and we are closer to the top ten than previously. Zarco made a great lap with his time attack, it will be a good chance to check his data and understand what we can improve tomorrow.”
