I’ve missed competing a lot, but also everything related to a Grand Prix. The Paddock is like a small rolling village and when you spend most of the year travelling around the world, it’s normal to form close personal relationships. Of course, most time is spent with your teammates and, in my case, we’ve been together for a long, long time. Most of them have been with me since Moto2, and I can say that they are now like family, each one with their personality and way of seeing life. We are a close-knit group and I wouldn’t want to mention anyone in particular.
Throughout my sporting career, I’ve met many people in the paddock, starting with the riders that have shared a box with me. The pity is that with what happened last season, my brother hasn’t been able to enjoy, work, and compete more. At least we’ve been able to do a bunch of virtual events! Which were a lot of fun there. I also remember having a lot of fun with Dani Pedrosa. We’ve been teammates for many years and the truth is that we have a very good relationship, both on and off the track. I remember when we shared events organised by Repsol: balloon rides, tractor races, a hidden camera… we were always joking and laughing.
I’ve also met living motorcycling legends in the paddock, riders who I admired and idolise when I used to dream of being a professional. Sharing opinions, experiences, stories of their era, and getting tips from people such as Ángel Nieto, Mick Doohan, Álex Crivillé, and Nicky Hayden is priceless. I like it a lot because they have a unique perspective on motorcycling and life in general. It’s true that times have changed, that motorcycling has evolved a lot since they were racing at the top, but I think it is always very important to listen, understand the perspective and experience of different people. Even more so if they are World Champions!
I have also had the chance to meet public figures who come and enjoy the races. For example, Andrés Iniesta, Gerard Piqué, Pau Gasol, and Fernando Alonso have all passed by our garage and I have a good relationship with all of them. I remember a very special meeting with Real Betis player, Joaquín. What can I say about him? Always joking around… Right now, if you ask me who I would like to meet or who I would like to chat with in the paddock, I would say F.C. Barcelona player, Ansu Fati.
The paddock has also given me the chance to meet many of you, to share happy moments and celebrate triumphs, take photos, and feel your warmth and encouragement. My best memories, are for true heroes of life with whom I like to share my time. Those people do not lose hope and have you as a reference to keep their strength and take life as it comes. It is so inspiring to meet people like “Super Celu”, with that spirit, with those stories of overcoming and then realise that you, unintentionally, can help them… It is the most beautiful thing about our profession.
Best wishes to hug to everyone, see you again soon, and “full throttle” for Jerez.
