The second day of action at the Circuit de Barcelona –Catalunya began with a free practice session -in which Miguel Oliveira was fastest– and the Q1 and Q2 sessions to decide the starting grid for the sprint race and Grand Prix itself. In the moment of truth, Pecco Bagnaia showed why he is the current World Champion and leader of the overall standings, breaking the circuit record with a 1:38.639 lap for pole position.
Alongside him, Aprilia riders Aleix Espargaró and Oliveira will share the front row, ahead of Maverick Viñales. The Top 10 was completed by Jorge Martín, Johann Zarco, Álex Márquez, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Brad Binder and Marco Bezzechi.
Step forward for Marc Márquez
There was a positive start to the day for Marc Márquez. After placing 18th in FP2, the 8-time MotoGP World Champion finished second in Q1, gaining access to Q2. In the final 15 minutes of the grid-defining session, Márquez once again lowered his time, and was 1.062s off pole position in twelfth.
On the other side of the Repsol Honda Team box, testing continued for Joan Mir. The two-time World Champion in Moto3 and MotoGP finished 20th in FP2, and 10th in Q1. With this result, Mir will start from 20th in both the sprint race and in the race on Sunday.
