The second day at the Chang International Circuit saw a very tight qualifying session, in which Jorge Martín (Ducati) achieved his fourth pole of the season. He set a time of 1:29.287. Luca Marini (Ducati) and Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) closed out the front row of the grid for the Thai Grand Prix.
The Top 10 was completed by Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati), Brad Binder (KTM), Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati), Álex Márquez (Ducati), Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda), Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) and Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha).
The first sprint race held at the Thai track will take place later on Saturday at 10.00 (CET) local time.
Morning of progress for Marc Márquez
The Repsol Honda team riders, who had failed to make the cut for Q2 on Friday, began the day trying to improve their feeling in preparation for qualifying and the sprint race: Marc Márquez finished in fourteenth position, while Joan Mir was nineteenth.
Márquez, who had been on the verge of qualifying for Q2 the previous day, set a good lap in Q1 that allowed him to get into the fight for pole. After having a discreet first part of the session, the Repsol Honda team rider took to the track in the final moments of qualifying and managed to take eighth place.
Mir was unable to shake off the problems that prevented him from completing a good lap on Friday, and did not make it out of Q1: He will start both races from nineteenth position.
