Marc had already won various speed championships in Catalonia in different categories, but the FIM CEV posed a greater challenge
The FIM CEV Repsol is the best test to prepare young, promising riders to take on the challenging Motorcycling World Championship. Marc Márquez took part in this competition, where he got his first opportunity to face up to the riders he competes against today. This was a big step up from the Catalonia championship — could number 93 keep up?
2006: Marc’s CEV debut
The rider from Cevera was just 13 when he began his first season in the championship. However, you couldn’t have called him a new rider. Marc had already won various speed championships in Catalonia in different categories, but the FIM CEV posed a greater challenge. The first race of that season took place in Albacete, and the favourites included Pol Espargaró, Jonas Folger, and Tito Rabat. Number 93 put his foot down and managed to finish in fifth place, despite the tough competition. However, his best performance was at the Jerez circuit, where he rode twice that year. Our young champion finished the race in fourth place on both occasions, a remarkable feat for a 13-year-old boy making his debut in a competitive environment for future MotoGP riders. Finishing eighth out of 82 riders, there was no doubt that a new star had appeared on the motorcycling stage.
2007: First victory
Marc Márquez’s second and last season in the FIM CEV marked his first victory in an international championship. In Jerez, our rider scored the highest marks of the seasons with a dazzling victory on a Grand Prix track. This success catapulted his career to the World Championship the following year, where he took his first steps towards becoming a 125cc champion. Marc achieved this goal two years later in 2010, at just 17 years of age.
FIM CEV Repsol is definitively the ideal stage for future world championship rider to sharpen their skills: a professional environment with official structures and the chance to ride on tracks like Jerez, Ricardo Tormo, and Le Mans. A perfect launch pad for Marc, supported all the way by Repsol.
